About the Tour

Le Morne Brabant, on Mauritius’ south-west coast, is far more than a mountain. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008, it stands as a powerful symbol of the island’s history—a refuge for escaped slaves and a place of remembrance.

Back in 2004, our Yanature team pioneered hiking on Le Morne Brabant, becoming the first to lead travellers safely along its slopes.

Two decades on, we continue to set the standard: small groups, experienced guides, and a conservation-minded approach rooted in thousands of ascents. Along the way, we share the living ecology of the mountain—from its dry forest to endemic plants like the rare Trochetia boutoniana, Mauritius’ floral emblem.

The hike is a rewarding 3.5–4 hour round trip, depending on group pace. Some steeper sections require the use of hands for short scrambles; your guide will coach safe movement and manage the route so everyone feels comfortable.

At the top, the effort pays off with sweeping views over the west and south-west lagoons and a unique perspective on the island’s coastline. Join us for a memorable half-day on one of Mauritius’ most meaningful landscapes—guided by the team that opened the way in 2004.

What you’ll do

  • Meet & brief (10–15 min)
Meet your guide at the Le Morne meeting point. Gear check, safety & route briefing, and a short intro to the mountain’s UNESCO history.
  • Forest approach (45–60 min)
Hike a well-marked trail through dry coastal forest. Your guide points out endemic plants and wildlife, as well as history and stories on the surrounding landscapes and landmarks.
  • Scramble section (30–45 min)
Tackle steeper rock sections using hands for balance. Your guide coaches footwork, sets a steady pace, and manages spacing for everyone’s comfort.
  • Summit ridge & panorama (20–30 min)
Reach the high viewpoint/ridge for sweeping views of the west and south-west lagoons. Time for photos, snacks, and stories of Le Morne’s role as a refuge for escaped slaves.
  • Guided descent (60–75 min)
Follow the same route down at a controlled pace, with spotting on the short scrambles and plenty of breaks.
  • Wrap-up (5 min)
Gentle stretch, debrief, and farewell. Your guide shares any group photos/clips after the tour.

Great hike with amazing view

Dec 06, 2025
It was an awesome experience but the hike is not for beginners. Be prepared for rock climbing type of situation so must have shoes with a good grip. We booked a guide for the hike – Rowin – and the guy was really helpful. He provided clear directions about the path and made sure we stepped on the right places while going up and coming down as well. Would definitely recommend having a guide on this hike since they know the terrain much better than a tourist which is non-negotiable in such a difficult hike. Don’t forget to carry sunscreen and enough water for the 7 km adventure. Enjoy!

Rewarding Hike up Le Morne Brabant!

Dec 01, 2025
We had a great hike up Le Morne Brabant with our very attentive and informative host Rowin! It’s a very humid affair and can be a slippery decent, but Rowin helped us navigate the hike easily and stopped at various points to tell us interesting history about the mountain!
